Qualification for Admissions

LLM Student come from 7 different countries

The LLM Program in American Law is a one-year program of study for lawyers and students who have law degrees from institutions in their home countries. The program is only open to foreign lawyers who plan to return to their home countries on completion of their LLM degree. To qualify for admission to the program, LLM applicants

  • Must not be a permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Must hold a basic first degree in law from an accredited or comparably recognized law school or law faculty in their home country. Law degrees or credits earned by correspondence courses or distance learning are not acceptable.
  • Must provide a TOEFL score, unless granted an exemption. Our minimum required TOEFL score is 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test), or 100 (internet-based test). We will consider granting an exemption from the TOEFL requirement if you are from an English-speaking country, earned your basic law degree in an English-speaking country, or received a prior academic degree in the United States.
  • May take an intensive English course before you begin our LLM program if your TOEFL score only meets our minimum for admission, if we believe you will benefit from more exposure to English. We may condition our acceptance on your satisfactory completion of an approved course. More on enrollment in an ESL course.
